Massachusetts Silver
Scarce Circulated Noe-7 Variety 1652 Oak Tree Shilling
1652 Oak Tree Shilling, IN at Bottom Type, Noe-7, Reverse Die State-G, Fine to Very Fine.
71.0 grns. This Oak Tree Shilling has a pleasing appearance for its type. It is of a later die state as illustrated in Noe on page 131, plate 11, as reverse Die State-G. The reverse die state is advanced as is typical for the Noe-7. The central Oak Tree is particularly sharp for this variety. Struck from the re-engraved obverse die, the reverse having distinctive significant die breaks, as made. Close examination of this shilling reveals the proper angled rims, some remnants of the necessary original file marks on the rim. The 71 grns (about 4.58 grams) of weight is right on target for this shilling. Possibly lightly cleaned many ages ago, it has a nice silver-gray appearance with very clear details. This coin was originally consigned from an old collection out of North Carolina. A scarce Noe-7 Oak Tree Shilling variety.
