1861 Civil War US Passport Signed by “William H Seward”
WILLIAM H. SEWARD (1801-1872). U.S. Secretary of State under President Abraham Lincoln, Negotiated “Seward’s Folly” being the purchase of Alaska from Russia. Survived the Assassination attempt on the same day as President Lincoln.
November 20, 1861-Dated Civil War Period, Partly-Printed Ornate Official Document Signed, “William H Seward” as Secretary of State, measuring 11.5” x 18”, 1 page, at Washington, Choice Very Fine. Being an impressive ornately designated U.S. Passport for James W. Boaler. This boldly printed Document is on heavy wove period paper, fully complete describing Mr. Boaler as 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches tall, blue eyes, large nose, small mouth with a round face and ruddy complexion. Expected light folds, minor toning, edge wear from actual use. Large American Eagle vignette at top and within the Department of State Seal near bottom. Vivid deep rich brown signature “William H Seward” measures a large 3.75” long at the conclusion. Scarce.
William Seward was a dominant figure in the Republican Party and strongly against the spread of the practice of Slavery. During the Civil War he dissuaded foreign intervention.

John Wilkes Booth also planned to Assassinate him the same day as President Lincoln. Seward was severely wounded by conspirator Lewis Powell. He survived the attempt, while the President did not. He continued to serve in politics and remained loyal to Andrew Johnson, even during the impeachment proceedings.
