Description
Palaeolithic to Neolithic, 100,000-1500 BC. Group comprising: a small Palaeolthic river gravel implement showing bifacial knapping with typical orange gravels patination and water wear, with an old printed collector label; a substantial and roughly knapped heavy scraper with pencilled Grimes Graves 1930 MH annotation with typical white patination; an exceptional, very carefully knapped rectangular-based heavy scraper with all four sides retouched to provide straight edges and sharp corners, with pencilled Horning (Crossweight) Sept 1938 and Sept 13 1938 annotations in a pale grey flint. Topping, P. Grime's Graves, 2007, for general information. 522 grams total, 56-88mm (2 1/4 - 3 1/2"). English private collection; acquired in the 1970s. Grime’s Graves is the only Neolithic flint mine open to visitors in Britain. This grassy lunar landscape of 400 pits was first named Grim’s Graves by the Anglo-Saxons. It was not until one of them was excavated in 1870 that they were identified as flint mines dug over 5,000 years ago. The site is now managed by English Heritage. [3, No Reserve]
