A mixed group of flint implements with inked collector's inventory numbers; including examples with old inked collection inventory numbers and others labelled 'Thames River Gravels'; 'Wandsworth' and one with old collector's label reading 'Flint Palaeolithic Cis[s]bury, Sussex Rev J. Magens Mello'. 703 grams total, 5-12.8 cm (2 - 5 in.). Found Thames River Gravels, U.K. The property of Mr and Mrs P. R. of East Sussex. Thence by descent to family members. Reverend John Magens Mello (1836-1914) was a British archaeologist and religious official. He graduated from Saint John's College Oxford in 1859 and was ordained in the same year. His time at Oxford coincided with the publication of Darwin's most famous work 'On the Origins of Species' and the controversy which ensued. Mello recognised the archaeological potential of the caves at Creswell Crags which he lived near and requested permission from the Duke of Portland to excavate them, which was granted in 1874; he was a fellow of the Geological Society, and in 1876 published 'A Handbook to the Geology of Derbyshire'.
