Description
3rd millennium BC. A carved black limestone cylinder seal depicting a contest scene, with original typed and signed scholarly note by the late W. G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Cylinder seal of black stone, 27 x 19mm. A contest scene of seven participants: a lion, three heroes, a calf and two bulls with human faces; terminal: scorpion below blank (for inscription"). Sumerian, Early Dynastics II-III, c. 2500-2400 B.C. Condition very good.'; accompanied by a museum quality impression. 18.41 grams, 27mm (1"). From a private collection of seals and amulets, the property of a Canadian gentleman living in London; from his father's collection formed in the late 1960s to 1980s; inventory number 155.
