Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Mayan territories, Maya, Late Classic period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A finely-carved green and blue-green jade pendant resembling a head with facial features in relief. The countenance is comprised of a prominent ovoid nose, recessed eyes, arching brows, bar-shaped ears, puffy lips, and a planar brow line. The verso is roughly flat, and a biconical suspension hole is drilled laterally through the head. A wonderful example with vibrant natural coloration and skillful construction! Size: 0.875" W x 1.1" H (2.2 cm x 2.8 cm).
Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private Nevada, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Arkansas, USA, acquired 1950s to 1960s

Age-commensurate surface wear, small chips to face, peripheries, and verso, and fading to some carved details, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout. Old inventory number "AR7638" written in black on verso.
