Arik Brauer started out in his twenties as a street singer in Paris and later made his living as a nightclub performer. His first LP record, words, music and singing all by Brauer, was so successful that Brauer earned two gold records.
Yet there is another Brauer. Born in Vienna in 1929 to Russian Jewish parents, he was nine when he was sent to a concentration camp. After seven years of forced labor, he had the spirit to return to Vienna and study at its Academy for the Pictorial Arts. Years of painting and wandering brought him in 1952 to Israel where he met and married Naomi, whose family came from Yemen. They have three daughters and live in the Israeli artist colony of Ein Hod. He spends part of each year in Vienna and Paris. Brauer's European acceptance began with one-man shows in Vienna and Paris. His paintings are to be found in the Austrian Gallery of 19th and 20th century painting, by the State Museum in Vienna and the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris. Brauer's style may be classified as surrealist; art critics have called him a younger brother to Chagall.
