Description
Rare Perugia Linen Towel, 15th/16th C, Umbria, Italy. Woven with indigo blue horizontal panels depicting animals, birds and dragons. Such towels were used in both ecclesiastical and secular contexts as napkin and table cover as well as altar cloth and sacristy hand towels. They were woven in mixed twill with white linen warp and weft and were characterized by bands of pattern created with a supplementary weft of cotton, almost always dyed blue. Size: 2'1'' x 5'6'' (64 x 168 cm). 1 lbs.
