This Vintage Popeye the Sailor Pinback Button- Paramount Pictures- King Features Syndicate-is unique in that it has a specific Popeye Club from the Village Theater. Button is in very good to excellent condition. Measures 1" in diameter. Stamped on the side Parisian Novelty Co. Chicago "Sole Licensee". Parisian Novelty Company was founded in Chicago, Illinois in 1898. For over a century Parisian Novelty was the leading manufacturer of button parts, button making machinery and equipment for North American companies serving the promotional products industry. Established by Louis L Joseph, the American born son of a German immigrant. This company manufactured novelties such as advertising toys buttons etc. And this was the business that Joseph wanted to be in. More than this, though, Joseph had a preference for novelties that used celluloid as a major component in their manufacture. Celluloid had only been around in various forms since the early 1860s and the brand Celluloid had only appeared in 1870. For a certain class of merchandise it was revolutionary because it was cheap to produce, and was light and easy to shape and mold into any conceivable shape and thickness. In its finished state, Celluloid was not only hard and durable, it was also flexible and importantly, for manufacturers like Joseph, it could be completely transparent. It was, quite literally, the world’s first commercially successful plastic.
