Ethel Washington Alaskan Eskimo Inuit Doll?
Ethel Washington Alaskan Eskimo Inuit Doll?
Item Details
Description
Ethel Washington (1889-1968) Alaskan Eskimo Inuit doll (?) made with a wood carved face, traditional fur clothing and thoughtful detail. Washington is considered the mother of doll making. She began carving dolls in the 1930's and used those talents to support herself and her family after her husband's death in 1951. Today, her exquisite figures can be found at the Anchorage Fine Arts and Historical Museum and the Rosalie Whyel Museum of Doll Arts in Bellevue, Washington. This doll stands approx. 10" and carries a baby on her back plus a spoon and birch basket in her hands. She is in good condition with some minor fur loss to the clothing. We are fairly certain this is an original Washington doll but it is not signed so we can not be 100% positive.
