Description
RACHEL SOPHIA WATERS (1806-1877), ANNE ARUNDEL CO., MARYLAND NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, eight alphabet and numeral rows above "The Sum of the ten COMMANDMENTS", a two-line verse, two alphabet rows, and "Rachel Sophia Waters / 1819". Not framed. Dated 1819. 15 3/4" x 17 1/2".
Excellent condition with typical light toning and fading, narrow spots of mounting paper to back of edges.
Provenance: From a Maryland private collection._x000D_
Descended in the family of Virginia Hall (1844-1902), Anne Arundel Co., MD.
Catalogue Note: Rachel Sophia Waters was the daughter of Jacob Franklin Waters (1775-1822) and Martha Hall Mullikin Waters (1775-1806) of Anne Arundel Co., Maryland. Her mother died 16 days after she was born. Rachel married Thomas John Hall Sr. (1800-1880) in 1826 and the couple had ten children. She is buried at St. James Episcopal Parish Church in Anne Arundel Co._x000D_
The doll in the following lot descended with this sampler. It was given by Rachel to her youngest daughter, Virginia (1844-1902).
