Description
Ca. 1860, 165 x 159 cm, North America, Pennsylvania
Meticulously worked in a chequerboard design of colourful fabric strips, this very beautiful quilt was made by Mennonites in Pennsylvania in the mid 19th century. According to information provided by the consignor, it was owned by the same family as of 1862 and probably made by female members of that family. Such quilts are early examples of a recycling process: worn clothing and other damaged textiles were cut up and reused. – Good condition, backed with a checked fabric.
