1862 GROSS Anatomy & Surgery Civil War Surgeon OWNED Medicine Pathology
Samuel Gross, a renowned 19th-century physician and surgeon, was well-known for his medical treatises on surgery, particularly “System of Surgery”. This work is highly desirable and important, regardless of edition, and, according to ‘Heirs of Hippocrates’ the greatest surgical treatise ever written and was for many years the standard text in medical schools. Gross composed this work to be “the most elaborate, if not the most complete treatise in the English language.” (GM 5607).
This 1862 edition is highly sought after and this example is no exception. This finely illustrated tome was acquired from an estate related to C.L Hill, a surgeon during the American Civil War.
