Robley Dunglison was a 19th-century English physician known for being the personal doctor to Thomas Jefferson. Dunglison published treatises on human physiology and diseases of children, but he is most remembered for his dictionary of medical science. ‘Heirs of Hippocrates’ notes that Dunglison ranks “among the most prolific of American medical writers and one of its finest lecturers. His works, while not offering much original material, were highly readable and accurate. Of his many books, his dictionary was probably the most popular, passing through twenty-three editions.”
