Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Moche III to Moche IV (Classic Period), ca. 450 to 650 CE. An incredibly preserved vessel in the form of a condor, shown seated, wings at rest along the body. The head has its distinctive carbuncle, the fleshy wattle over the beak, that indicates the species. The condor was seen as the messenger between heaven and earth, who carried the souls of the dead into the sky on its strong wings. Condors also appear in Moche artwork eating the eyes and genitals of sacrificial victims. Size: 10.5" L x 8" W x 8.4" H (26.7 cm x 20.3 cm x 21.3 cm)
