Description
Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, probably Campania, ca. 4th century BCE. Sweet and petite, a miniature blackware vessel in the shape of a pumpkin or gourd, with a flared tubular neck rising above, and a strap handle joining neck to shoulder, all upon a slightly concave base. The piece is glazed in a deep, glossy black that may have been intended to imitate bronze over most of the body and handle. Campanian wares, one of the five types of known pottery produced in the Greek South Italic colonies, were made by Greek colonists in the cities of Capua and Cumae. Size: 2" in diameter x 2.75" H (5.1 cm x 7 cm)
