Western Europe, ca. 18th century CE. A lovely pair of brass mortars and pestles - the mortars with twin squared handles, cylindrical bodies with dramatically flared rims, fine-line striations incised on the walls, the smaller one with incised concentric circles on the underside of the base, the larger one with inventory numbers incised on the underside of the base - the pestles with flared knobbed ends, protruding central details, the smaller one with fine line incised striations adorning its length, and the larger one with hammered textured surface. Mortars and pestles were standard tools of the medical trade during this time period. This example is one of ample size and elegant design.
