Western Europe, French, ca. 18th Century CE. A brass mortar with a cylindrical body that flares to a wider rim and sits upon a flat flared foot. Surrounding each handle engraved on the exterior walls is a geometric design. Above the base and below the rim are fine line striations. The pestle has knobbed ends and the middle of the shaft has a rib. Mortars and pestles such as this were used primarily for grinding up ingredients for medicinal purposes. Solid brass, a wonderful example of European craftmanship. Size: 6.25" W x 7.5" H (15.9 cm x 19 cm)
Provenance: private Ventura County, California, USA collection, acquired in the 1990-2000

Condition
Nicks to rim and surface wear commensurate with use and age. Lower section reattached with visible break line. Clearly used well with nice areas of green and russet patina.
