Spanish Colonial, Mexico, 19th century CE. A very fine Mexican folk retablo created by Concepcion Avila, also known as the Bee Sting Lip Painter - one of the great retablo masters whose unique painterly style is evident in this piece. The subject of the composition is the Archangel Michael, champion of the Army of God fighting the forces of evil. He is depicted in a traditional manner - as a winged archangel donning battle attire, standing in triumph and brandishing a fiery sword (note the red flames), as Lucifer is underfoot. Saint Michael is the patron saint of soldiers, police officers, paratroopers, and mariners. He is oftentimes called upon by the ill and infirm. Fitted to a custom wood mount and wired for suspension.
