Description
By: Ruth Taylor
Date: 1935 (Published) Boston
Dimensions: 11.5 x 8.5 inches (29.2 cm x 22.2 cm)
This colorful pictorial map of Arizona was done in 1935 by Ruth Taylor. It appeared in the atlas published by Taylor and her husband Frank Taylor entitled “Our U.S.A. - a Gay Geography”, with maps done by Ruth and text by her husband.
The map provides local color and flavor, depicting cultural stereotypes, industries and activities of the state. The Grand Canyon and the Colorado River receive much attention in this brightly-colored map. The Hoover Dam is depicted, and the copper mining industry which propelled revenues to the mid-1950s is given attention.
This map was made before air conditioning and refrigeration were as widely available as they were to become, thus does not depict the population boom which took place starting in the mid-20th century. Iconic images include cowboys, indigenous peoples and their reservations, ranching, the famous stagecoach stop of Wickenburg, tepees, early Spanish architectural remains and the Casa Granda Ruins. Cacti punctuate the desert areas, and the Petrified Forest National Monument is pictured. This is a lively and fun map showing the versatility of the state of Arizona.
