West Africa, Nigeria, Ibibio / Anaang people, ca. early 20th century CE. A charming standing wooden figure of a woman. She has twin spiral-shaped plaits that hang down from her head, which is large and pronounced, with a classic Ibibio-style carved face. Her clothing is interesting, with a large necklace above a blue-painted torso. Her breasts and belly button are prominent, and her hands, pressed to her stomach, may indicate pregnancy. She stands on thick red legs, with her genitalia also clearly carved. Probably a shrine or ceremonial figure. Size: 4" W x 14.6" H (10.2 cm x 37.1 cm)
Provenance: the late Nick Poolos collection, Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired before 1970

Condition
Front of feet are lost. Small area of inactive insect damage on back of head and one part of hair. Otherwise figure is in nice condition with bright remaining pigment.
