Description
**Originally Listed At $800**
Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, ca. 2nd millennia BCE. A mold-made earthenware plaque depicting a pair of standing male figures, one presenting the other with a weapon or offering. Both are wearing rounded caps and similar garments. They may represent mythical gods or warrior figures, as there is a strong tradition in the ancient Near East of swords and other weapons being associated with the gods, who are often depicted on plaques like this one. Custom stand. Size: 4.875" W x 4.125" H (12.4 cm x 10.5 cm)
During this time period, the Mesopotamians produced great numbers of clay plaques, many of which survive to this day. They were made for use by private individuals or families in the home, which is where most have been excavated. They are often found broken, probably because their ritual power was no longer needed or had expired. They provide a special glimpse into the life of this period.
Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
