Item Details
Description
Monumental ceramic garden urn with closed handles, reportedly created in Chicago. All over squeeze bag outline of exotic flowers, coiled tendrils and leaves into which white glaze was applied then surrounded by jet black glaze. Measures 19 inches tall and across the handles. Weight 35 pounds. Unmarked. Several chips about the base rim. Crazing. This lot comes from the Ross C. Purdy Museum, a part of the American Ceramic Society in Westerville, Ohio. The ACS, founded in 1899, is dedicated to advances in the material science and the artistic realities of ceramics. The Ross C. Purdy Museum, once the personal collection of ceramic engineer and noted author, Ross C. Purdy was opened in 1981. In recent years, the ACS has transferred most of the collection to either the American Museum of Ceramic Art in Pomona, California or the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina. The ACS will maintain a small display of glass and ceramics at it's headquarters but since it no longer maintains a museum, it was decided to offer items in storage to those collectors who would appreciate them.
