Description
Large 17/18th C. Chinese Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1912) Tibetan gilt bronze Buddha deity figure of Bernag Chen, the Great Black-Cloak Vajra Mahakala, the personal protector of the Karmapas and the special protector of the Karma Kagyu Kamtsangpa School.
Fiercely wrathful, with one face, three round bloodshot eyes, a gaping red mouth with bared white fangs, a curled tongue, slightly smiling and wrathful, with three eyes glancing rapidly. His mustache and eyebrows shining and hair flowing upwards like red flames. Adorned with various jewel ornaments and having a lower garment of various silks. The outstretched right hand give the Karana mudra which has its index finger and little finger pointing straight upwards, while the other fingers fold into the palm. The meaning of this gesture is to ward off evil and to get rid of demons and negative energy. The left holds a white blood filled skull cup to the heart (missing). Adorned with a crown of five skulls, a snake entwined in the hair, earrings, bracelets, anklets and a garland of freshly severed heads, he wears a great cloak tied with a sash at the waist. All Adorned with human skin, tiger pelt loin cloth, bracelets, anklets, necklace, and serpent pendant slithering through the immense bouffant. Bronze is in beautiful condition with minimal marring of the surface.
The Buddha Deity rest upon a carved rectangular hardwood stand.
Extensive trace of gilt and red pigments on hair.

Over all in EXCELLENT condition, missing scup/bowl on left hand. With normal anomalies in nature, sign of stressed surface, minor scratch & dent. Surface traced wear and or declined to gilding; Normal, considering ages and wears.
