Huari Textile Tunic Panel Fragment
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Wari (Huari), Middle Horizon period, ca. 6th to 9th century CE. A beautiful textile tunic fragment composed of tightly-woven natural (alpaca or camelid wool) fibers in hues of gold, maroon, fuchsia, espresso, cream, and beige. The panel features a pair of ornate columns decorated with abstract stepped, spiral, and triangular motifs separated by two solid beige bars. This panel represents the degree to which this style is highly stylized and sometimes difficult to interpret. A fabulous example from ancient southern Peru! Mounted on a fabric-lined wooden frame. Size (textile): 20" W x 24" H (50.8 cm x 61 cm); size (backing): 23.75" W x 27.75" H (60.3 cm x 70.5 cm).

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Eugene F. Behlen collection
