Description
A sailing junk cought in stormy seas, driving rain and under a threatening sky. The masterpiece from a set of six prints issued in album form with the title "Famous places in Osaka, selected views of Mt. Tempo." Originally published in Osaka, 1834 by Shioya Kisuke, the print at auction is published by Adachi from recarved woodblocks. In the circular cartouche: "View of a Storm at Tempozan, Osaka." Gakutei is best known for his many surimono. He was also a kyoka poet and painter. Unfortunately he produced few landscapes. This print is considered one of the great 19th century landscapes.
Yashima Gakutei (1786-1868) was a Japanese artist and poet who was a pupil of both Totoya Hokkei and Hokusai. Gakutei is best known for his kyoka poetry and surimono works.
