Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $200**

Roman Empire, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A well-thrown, redware bowl with a broad shallow receptacle and a flat rim, all on a diminutive round ringed foot. This type of pottery was mass produced in Roman provinces and exported throughout the western part of the Empire. They were made to be used for displaying and serving foods. Some were decorated, but many, like this one, were simple shapes with a plainer finish. Many of them are known to have originated in Roman Britain; some came from the famous Pompeii "hoard", a collection of the vessels found in a crate that had arrived in the town yet had not been taken out of their packaging when Mt. Vesuvius erupted on August 23, 79 CE. Size: 9.125" W x 1.75" H (23.2 cm x 4.4 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California collection, acquired before 2000
