Wood netsuke. Japan, 19th century
The kappa are mythological beings that live in rivers and can be quite dangerous, luring and drowning people and animals, but can also be helpful. They have a small pool of water on their head and a turtle shell on their back. This kappa is seated next to a tent-like lotus leaf that contains a tiny frog, only visible if you look very closely. Signature MASA-TSUGU æ£ æ¬¡ and himotoshi on the flat base, fine patina.
