Description
Wood and lacquer. Japan, Edo period
The smaller lidded box of square shape with a slightly domed cover. Covered in black polished lacquer and decorated in gold hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with stalks of leafy bamboo, peonies and aoi-mon (hollyhock crests). The larger box of square shape and covered in black polished lacquer and decorated in gold hiramaki-e with scrolling vines and leaf-mon.
Condition: Slight material loss in the table corners; overall good condition
Provenance: From an old Austrian private collection acquired before 1930 - with old collection numbers at the base
