Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A semi-translucent, yellow-green glass bowl, its body presenting thirteen prominent vertical ribs, an outward flaring rim, a slight concave base, and a deep interior basin. According to the "Solid Liquid" catalogue, "The exact technique of manufacturing such ribbed bowls is still not fully understood, but it apparently involved several steps, including casting, cutting and polishing" ("Solid Liquid," Fortuna Fine Arts, New York, 1999, p. 39). This vessel has an elegant presentation with thick areas of silvery and rainbow iridescence in hues of amethyst, emerald, citrine, and sapphire. A gorgeous example of this technique's manifestation! Small area of repair to rim. Small chip to rim with stable hairline fissure extending downward. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, small nicks and chips to rim, with some roughness to body, base, and rim, otherwise very good. Light earthen deposits and wonderful silver and rainbow iridescence throughout.
