Description

Native American, Pacific Northwest, Ivan "Coyote" Otterlifter (1936-1999), ca. 1972 CE. A gorgeous copper dagger with a deer bone guard and a carved wooden handle in the form of a traditionally Pacific Northwestern-shaped human head. Mother-of-pearl shell panels form the eyes, while red and black applied textiles create hair on the side and back of the head, respectively. The face is carved to have a huge eye, a curved-under nose, and the mouth puckered as if the figure is whistling or blowing on something. Below the head is a wrapped twine handle. A simple, ovoid bone guard is beneath this, the bone highly polished to a creamy color. Below that is the copper blade, slightly concave on one side, with a triangular-shaped series of three raised ridges on the other. Striking and unique! Size: 3" W x 18" H (7.6 cm x 45.7 cm)

Condition

Matte copper-colored patina on blade, with some small nicks and chips. Twine handle is slightly darkened from age and handling. The "hair" looks like it once had real hair attached to it, almost all of which is lost.
