1901 1st ed First Men in the Moon H.G. Wells Science Fiction Illustrated
“a milestone in modern science fiction!”
– Survey of Science Fiction Literature, (on ‘First Men’)
Herbert Geroge Wells was an English writer who wrote books in a number of genres but is most remembered for his works of science fiction such as ‘The Time Machine’, ‘War of the Worlds’, and ‘The First Men in the Moon.’
In 1901, Wells published one of his many ‘fantastic stories’ in ‘The First Men in the Moon;’ a story that follows a journey to the moon only discovery extraterrestrial lifeforms of insect-like creatures inhabiting it. According to one scholar, this work is
“One of Wells better known and altogether delightful scientific romances… an example of Wells humor and satire at its best” (Feir 18).
This first British, limited edition is illustrated with twelve inserted engravings of illustrations by Claude Shepperson and features the original decorative blue cloth binding. The British first edition was published only one month following the first U.S. release in 1901 and has only slight textual differences from the U.S. Still, an impressive and important piece of fiction literature.
