Rare First Edition. Pp. 241 engraved numbered portrait plates plus two frontispiece and colophon, the plates are numbered 1 to 241 in the top left corners in plate, bound in later original full fine crushed morocco leather bindings, boards paneled in gilt, gilt decorated spine with 5 raised bands, gilt lettering in compartments.
Bound by Riviere and Sons, Eng., stamped in gilt on the lower lip of the insides of the front boards.
Date and place taken from the Colophon.
Portraits of the Popes from St. Peter to Innocent XI.
The last plate is dated 1676.
Colophon states Io. Iacobus de Rubeis formis Romae, ad Templum S.Mariae de Pace. Anno Iubil. 1675 cum Privil. S. Pontific.
The complete set is extremely rare, with the Popes of Rome in 241 numbered portraits, apparently trimmed and taken from the Chronologia Summorum Romanorum Pontificum in qua habentur verae eorum effigies ex antiquis numismatibus et picturis delineatae, ac nomina cognomina ab. Anastasio, Luitprando, Panvinio, Baronio.
At the British Museum there are only a few single portraits, cut from the large original sheets.
Published in Rome. Made by Jacobus de Rubeis after Giovanni Maria Morandi. Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi, Jacobus de Rubeis 1626 to 1691. Giovanni Maria Morandi 1622 to 1717 originated from Florence.
Plate 175 is of Pope Innocent III not to be confused with anti pope Innocent III, r. 1198 to 1216 CE, is depicted in this print from Chronologia Summorum Romanorum Pontificum, published in 1675 CE.
The text at the bottom reads Innocent III, born Lothar of the Counts of Segni began 8 January 1198 CE. He sat 18 years, 6 months, 9 days. He died 16 July 1216 CE.
