Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An interesting group of ten Roman bronze medical tools showing the level of medical skill and technology almost 2000 years ago. Included in this ensemble are five scoops, three probes, a scalpel with a thick handle, and an ornate set of tweezers with hexagonal pinching tips. These medical instruments would have been likely used by field surgeons that followed the Roman army as it battled its way from settlements in Britain throughout Asia Minor. Size of largest (scoop): 5" L (12.7 cm).

Provenance: private Chicago, Illinois, USA collection, acquired in the 1980s
