Description
Central Asia, Nepal, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A detailed bronze gilded statue depicting Hayagriva, a horse-headed form of Shiva, embracing his shakti (female consort), Vajravarahi. They represent the concept of Yab-Yum, literally "father-mother", which is a common symbol in Indian, Bhutanese, Tibetan, and Nepalese Buddhism. It represents the male (symbolizing compassion and skillful) in sexual union with the female (symbolizing wisdom and insight). Both he and his consort are dressed in finery, wearing jewelry, crowns, and elaborate costumes. They stand atop a tiered throne. Size: 3.75" W x 7.75" H (9.5 cm x 19.7 cm)
