Description
Tibet, 19th Century An important heavy gilt bronze group cast depicting Samantabhadra in tantric union with his mystical wife Samantabhadri. The two deities are shown here in the Yab Yum sacred embrace and rest on an elaborate polygonal stepped base decorated with Buddhist motifs in relief.Samantabhadra (in Chinese Puxian / in Tibetan Kun Tu Bzang Po), according to the Tibetan school Rnying Ma, embodies the Primal Buddha (Adibhudda) and is represented in blue joined to Vajrayogini Samantabhadri identified with the attributes of the Kapala in the left hand and Kartika in the right.Incarnation of the primordial purity of Samsara and Nirvana, Samantabhadra is revered as Yegzhi (The Primordial Base), born from the eternal union of Knowledge (Rigpa) and Emptiness (Suniata).Based on a rich symbolism, the mystical message is reinforced with images of Vishvajra (the Suniata) at the centre and the two groups of Thunkar conches at the sides, symbol of the proclamation to the world of Buddhist Law.Provenance: recorded prior to 1930 in the family home in London, passed by inheritance to the present owner. h 24 cm
