Description
**Originally Listed At $200**
India, ca. 17th century CE. Two finely carved wooden figural avatars of Lord Vishnu. The first depicts Hayagriva (Hayagreeva), the horse-headed avatar of Lord Vishnu who is worshipped as the god of wisdom and knowledge in Hinduism, standing upon an integral plinth with a stylized lotus pattern. The second most likely depicts Mohini, the only female avatar of Vishnu, traditionally portrayed as an enchantress, sometimes shown with multiple heads (here she has two), who is believed to cause lovers to go mad. She also stands upon an integral plinth. Both pieces are skillfully carved and incised with details, and both show wonderful lustrous patina that has developed with age. Size: Hayagriva measures 6" H (15.2 cm)
Provenance: ex-private San Diego, California, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
