AN INDIAN MINIATURE PAINTING OF VISHNU AS VARAHAVATARA
Item Details
Description
Miniature painting with colors and gold on paper. Northern India, Kashmir, 19th century

Vishnu's incarnation as a boar and the related killing of the demon Hiranyaksha is particularly important because it was this demon that held the goddess of the earth imprisoned in the depths of the sea at the time of the great flood. All life would have died out, had Vishnu not dived down to the bottom of the sea as a boar, killed the demon and freed the earth goddess. In this painting, the god stands on a red, headless Hiranyaksha holding a sword and the wicked smiling head by the hair. The outer border features blossoms, birds, rabbits, foxes and dogs (?) and the right page shows a large tree-shaped composition consisting of a vase and many birds.
