Description
A Companion's badge in GOLD with red and green enameled rose; centre medallion in GOLD with portrait of Queen Victoria, within blue enamelled outer circlet with motto "IMPERATRICIS AUSPICIIS"; crown suspension in gold and enamels; long, blue neck ribbon with fastening hooks; in the original, fitted, black morocco case of issue, with maker's mark of Garrard & Co., London, printed in black on the inner cushion; the lid with gold embossed "C.I.E.".A beautiful, rare piece, extremely fine condition. The Order of the Indian Empire was founded by Queen Victoria in 1878 as a further reward for eminent merits and services, not deserving the award of the higher Order of the Star of India. Besides the award to Indian Royals and Princes, the order was destined to Indian and British officers and stare officials. Not awarded since 1947, with the death of the last Knight, the Maharaja of Dhrangadhra, the order became dormant.
