Item Details
Description
Fremiet, Emmanuel (France: B. 6 December 1824 – 10 September 1910) Antique 19th Century master sculpture of Napoleon Bonaparte on horseback post his escape from his first exile to Elba in February 1815. Fremiet’s intention for this sculpture was to capture a pinpoint in history of Napoleon accepting his defeat at the battle of Waterloo after he had regained power of France after his first exile. Fremiet’s expertise and exquisite craftsmanship shows in the tiresome facial expressions of both Napoleon & his war fought horse. Emmanuel Fremiet is a 19th century world renown sculptor who’s works have been exhibited all throughout the world, are currently held in prominent museums / galleries and has influenced some of the greatest sculptors preceding himself. Fremiet’s most notable works include an equestrian sculpture of Joan of Arc, Gorilla Carrying Woman, historical figural sculptures & wildlife sculptures. He was named an Officer of the French Legion of Honor in 1878, he became a member of the Academie of des Beux-Arts in 1892, and succeeded Antoine-Louis Bayre as professor of animal drawing at the Natural History Museum of Paris. This sculpture of Napoleone di Buonaparte was handed down throughout the family of the original owner who obtained this piece in Paris and comes from an estate with a number of rare antiques & fine art. The gold patina has darkened over all these years & can be cleaned by a proper art restorer. I chose to list this piece in its natural state to actually preserve its proper aging. This sculpture is signed E. Fremiet to base & F. Barbedienne Fonderie to side. This foundry mark guarantees that this sculpture was crafted in the 19th century as Ferdinand Barbedienne was born in 1810 and died in 1892. Underneath the wooden base cover the initials VL are incised twice. Piece measures 12” Wide x 12-7/8” Tall. Shipping Domestic U.S. $85 plus insurance.
