Description
Africa, Nigeria, Igbo, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. Hand-carved in the round, a wooden Alusi (deity) in the form of a standing anthropomorphic figure with a prominent outie navel, broad square shoulders, long arms with hands placed on his waist, and a solemn visage supported by a very long neck. Though nude for the most part, he does wear a loin cloth and is bedecked with necklaces and multiple armbands. In Igbo society, the Ikenga is a ritual object that symbolizes masculine strength as well as the ability to achieve great things using one's own efforts. Igbo literally means "place of strength." Size: 22.25" H (56.5 cm); 23.125" H (58.7 cm) on included custom stand.
