Description
Esek Hopkins (1718-1802) Commander in Chief of the Continental Navy. Hopkins was named a brigadier general of its land forces at the outbreak of the Revolution, but a call from the Continental Congress induced him to forsake the army and accept the command (Dec. 22, 1775) of the first Continental fleet then outfitting at Philadelphia. Henry Marchant (1741-1796) Marchant served many posts including, Rhode Island State Attorney (1771 to 1777), Delegate to the Continental Congress from Rhode Island (1771 to 1779), and Judge of the United States District Court for Rhode Island from 1790 to his death in 1796. He was a Signer of the Articles of Confederation in 1777. 7 ½” x 3” manuscript document signed on the reverse by both Hopkins and Marchant, State of Rhode Island, December 1779, the document is an order to pay Henry Marchant out of the General Treasury.
