Description
Ship's log for the H.M.S Hampshire, June 1913 – January 1914. Folio. 56 leaves with manuscript entries (approximately half of the volume, the last half blank), + 6 drawings/maps (some mounted onto stubs, some laid in), and 12 photos mounted onto card. Cloth over hardcovers. ******************** A rare ship's log providing an up-close view from China in the years leading up to WWI, including entries related to the Second Revolution in China. The log contains numerous entries recording encounters ashore and at sea, and it signed by the Captain in various places throughout. The maps and figures are quite well-drawn, and most are outlined in color. The photos (taken ashore) portray some of the gruesome realities of the conflict in China at the time. The H.M.S. Hampshire was an armored cruiser which transferred to China Station in 1912, and she remained there until the start of WWI in 1914. In 1916, she would fall prey to a German mine (or possibly sabotage); many crew were lost along with Field Marshal Lord Kitchener.
