A FINE ART NOUVEAU RUSSIAN ICON OF ST. ALEXIS OF MOSCOW, CIRCLE OF VIKTOR VASNETSOV, CIRCA 1905. The icon painted on a metal support attached to a traditional wooden icon panel with single slat (shponki) inset on verso and then covered in an embroidered cloth. At center of the icon is a full length figure of the Saint in the attire of Metropolitan and delivering a blessing with his right hand and in his left hand holding an open book of Gospels upon which the text is painted on silk a line from the parable of the sower:" - "And that which [fell] on good ground are those who, with good heart and kind, hearing the word keep [it], and produce fruit in patience." In the background, a Moscow Kremlin Cathedral and, in the upper left corner, Christ and, upper right, the Mother of God. The painted figures follow closely the style of known works by the noted painter and iconographer Viktor Vasnetsov (1848-1926). This same style is echoed in the colorful and artistically executed riza composed of a profusion of multicolored seed beads including the flowering buds interspersed throughout the foreground grass as often seen in paintings by Vasnetsov. Unique icons such as the offered lot and of this particular subject became quite popular at this time and were often gifted to the heir apparent to the throne, Alexei Nikolayevich Romanov whose patron saint was Saint Alexius Metropolitan of Moscow. Period photographs of the TsarevichÂ’s bedroom display a multitude of icons depicting the same subject and further research may connect the offered lot to the Tsarevich. 12.75 inches x 9 inches (32.5 x 23 cm).
