Description
A Fine Brass and Enamel Russian Icon, St. Nicolas of Myra, 19th Century
Russia, 19th century, nicely detailed darkened brass icon enameled in blue. Eighteen smaller depictions of saints frame the central saint: Nicholas of Myra (4th c.). It is said that Nicholas gave away his wealth and traveled the countryside helping the poor and sick. He is associated with a famous legend from Bari (Southern Italy) when he helped three poverty-stricken girls marry (and thus escape life on the streets) by gifting them gold that served as their dowries. Because of his gift giving, he is linked to the figure of Santa Claus--and his feast day is 6 December, popularly celebrated in many cultures.

Sight 5" x 5 1/2", framed size 9" x 10"
