Indonesia, Borneo, East Kalimantan, Tunjung tribe, early 20th century CE. A standing hand-carved wooden shaman charm figure with its arms positioned next to its body, carrying a large lizard on his back. Beautiful dark patina. Comes with custom stand. Size: 0.5" W x 2.5" H (1.3 cm x 6.4 cm)
Prior to the arrival of missionaries in the dense rainforest of Borneo - and for those not convinced by their message - the Tunjung had shamans who were powerful and esteemed personages within a village, who needed to be consulted for every major village decision and who functioned as healers and advice-givers for individuals within the village.
