Painting by Ethel Edwards, Pennsylvania Museum of Fine Arts label 40" x 34".Titled: "The Land of Music".This work came from the collection of painting, sculpture and jewelry by Xavier Gonzalez and his artist wife, Ethel Edwards,that was given to the Art Students League of New York,by the Gonzalez family after Xavier's passing, and is being sold to raise funds for future student scholarships.The sale of this object will directly benefit the Xavier Gonzalez and Ethel Gonzalez Memorial Fund.Both Xavier Gonzalez and Ethel Edwards were at one time teachers at the Art Students League.David Killen Gallery is proud and excited to partner with the Art Students League of New York in selling these works, which have been in storage for a number of years, and prior to that, in the collection of the Xavier Gonzalez and Ethel Edwards family.////////////////////////////////////////////////(From Wiki):"Ethel Edwards, (1914–1999), was an American painter, collage artist, illustrator, and muralist born in Opelousas, Louisiana and died on January 24, 1999.In 1933 she entered Newcomb College in New Orleans where she studied with Xavier Gonzalez. She married Gonzales in 1936 in Alpine, Texas, where he had conducted a summer art colony for several years.They continued the summer art school until 1936 when Xavier took a leave of absence to live in France. Returning to Alpine with her husband in late 1937, Edwards won a national competition to paint a post office mural, Afternoon on a Texas Ranch, for Lampasas, Texas.[2][3] In 1942 she completed a mural, Life on the Lake for the post office in Lake Providence, Louisiana.During the World War II war years Edwards and Gonzales moved to New York City where they both taught at the Art Students League and she did fashion illustrations for Town & Country and Fortune magazines.From 1942 to 1949, the couple lived in New York City and spent summers at Wellfleet, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. Edwards later taught at the Truro Center of the Arts.The Xavier Gonzalez and Ethel Edwards Travel Grant given by The Art Students League of New York was first awarded in 2002; it provides stipends to artists for travel in Spain. Edwards was an instructor at the Art Students League.Her papers can be found in the Archives of American Art in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C..Two of her paintings are owned by the United States Bureau of Reclamation.
Condition
Good condition overall, small hold in lower center right, just to the left of the signature.The size is roughly 1/8th of an inch or the size of the round head of a flat head nail.See the photos.On the 9th photo it's the small hole to the far left side of the photo with the signature, under the white diagonal with the black line.
