In 1923 John Crowe Ransom was the recipient of the Southern Prize poem award for his poem "Armageddon." Runners-up were William Alexander Percy and Donald Davidson, whose poems "A Fragment" and "Avalon" also appear here. John Crowe Ransom was an American educator, scholar, literary critic, poet, essayist and editor. He is considered to be a founder of the New Criticism school of literary criticism.
