Description
Photograph of Tine van Klooster, accompanied by letter from Koos Schregardus. These two women were partners in an Amsterdam literary publishing house called De Spieghel. They refused to join the Nazi Kulturkammer (chamber of culture), and were raided by the Gestapo in May of 1944. At the time, they were hiding a Dutch Resistance fighter and artist named Gerrit van der Veen, who was later named Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem. (He was arrested with them and murdered by the Nazis a month later.) The letter is addressed to an American friend who had sent Christmas greetings to van Klooster. In the letter, Schregardus delivers the bad news that "Tina has died ... at the German concentration camp Ravensbruck." Schregardus goes on to say that "Tina was a very active member of the Netherlands resistance movement. She did all she could do in the immense strungle [sic] of our little people against Nasicism [sic] and German penetration and she has fallen as a soldier for our national rights and privileges." The back of the photo has van Klooster's born and died dates ("arrested by the Gestapo, died in the concentration camp Ravensbruck"). A dramatic and historic lot. Photo excellent. Letter has folds, as expected.
