Item Details
Description
REMBRANDT HARMENSZOON VAN RIJN (Dutch 1606-1669) A PORTFOLIO OF PRINTS, "Rembrandt Radierungen: Eine Auswahl Von Hundert Der Wertvollsten Radierungen Des Meister," the title translates to "Rembrandt Etchings: A Selection of a Hundred of the Most Valuable Etchings of the Master," the loose wing wallet containing one hundred collotypes after Rembrandt's etchings, edited in 1939 by Walter Weichardt, published by the Deutsche Buchgemeinschaft in Berlin, and printed in Germany, the prints of various sizes and mounted on large loose white sheets. NOTE: Before the invention of the lithographic printing process, collotype prints allowed for publishers and printers to create and distribute photographic reproductions of artwork within books and on a mass scale. Collotype prints are created through a photomechanical process. A printing plate is covered in a layer of bichromated gelatin before it is exposed to the image's negative via an ultraviolet (UV) light source. UV rays hamper the exposed gelatin's ability to absorb water. Afterward, the plate is rinsed with water to force a chemical reaction: the gelatin that was not exposed to UV grows, swells, and expands into the microscopic reticulated pattern characteristic of collotypes. While the plate is still damp, it is inked. The gelatin exposed to UV hardens due to its inability to absorb water. These hardened areas also repel ink, and thus become the highlights of the image. Ink accumulates and creates shadows where the gelatin has not been exposed to UV and remains soft, absorbent, and moisture sensitive. Once complete, the print is produced by placing a piece of heavy duty paper on top of the plate. The transfer of the image is typically achieved with the use of a hand proof press. Special thanks to the George Eastman House. Height: 19 1/2" Width: 14" Depth: 1 1/2"
